Welcome to the Birchfield Coal Mines Website
Birchfield Coal Mines extracts coal from the Rotokohu coal measures in the Giles Creek basin near Reefton on the West Coast of the South Island. Giles Creek coal is utilised extensively and successfully by the industrial, service and primary production sector for the South Island industries. The coal is sub bituminous, low in sulphur and has clean burning, heat retaining characteristics making it ideal for industrial boilers and enclosed domestic burners.
Birchfield Coal Mines Limited is a privately owned family company whose directors have widely established mining interests on the West Coast. There is a strong emphasis on all mine sites to exceed environmental expectations. The Giles Creek mine began production in 1984, and has established an infrastructure to extract and process coal at a rate of 500,000 tonnes per annum.
Giles Creek coal is one of the cleanest burning coals available on the energy market today as little or no chimney cleaning is required. The coal burns away to a fine clean ash, which should be disposed of carefully as it may retain heat for several days.
Giles Creek coal is perfect for blending with faster burning, higher heat value coals as it captures the hotter heat and ensures thorough and economical combustion. These hotter coal blends are available from our Kaiata outlet.
Birchfield Coal Mines supplies industrial coals to meat, dairy and wool processing, horticulture, and service industries throughout the West Coast and the rest of the South Island.
